The Ask
Baker Associates and RJM Construction needed a cost-effective architectural metal solution for two high-visibility areas, a coffee bar feature and a suspended ceiling element, after all prior bids exceeded budget.
They requested a minimalist, deconstructed aesthetic using thin metal strips with no horizontal reinforcement, posing a structural challenge. Additionally, for the ceiling panels, they required concealed joints visible only from above, requiring precise engineering coordination.
We adapted one of our existing Signature designs to meet both the visual and structural demands, collaborating closely with the architect, designer, and contractor to ensure feasibility and seamless integration.
Our Role
Mod Metal fabricated and delivered shaped, powder-coated metal panels for a coffee bar room divider (Phase I) and a suspended lattice ceiling (Phase II). All 41 components were precision-cut to form a rhythmic design derived from our Transit pattern.
Phase I required structural analysis to eliminate horizontal supports, while Phase II involved ceiling panels suspended with concealed joints and no visible welds from below. Installation demanded precise alignment of butt joints and varied panel lengths to preserve the design flow.
Weekly coordination with the project team at RJM Construction ensured accuracy at every stage. What set this project apart was its high technical complexity, carefully engineered to appear effortless.
