Click to view example New Rattan Remix Rattan Remix is inspired by the traditional wicker weave structure of rattan, which consists of layers of interlocking and overlapping strips of natural fibers. We bring a unique look to traditional rattan by reducing the weave structure to simple geometric shapes, lending itself harmoniously to the clean cuts of laser-cut metal. Our version deconstructs the W logo, playing off signature motifs in Hoffman’s textiles. Click to view example Stempel Part of our Werkstätte series, and influenced by Hoffman’s bold geometry and architectural references, Stempel features an elongated triangle shape which is mirrored and doubled in the negative space. It’s intended to be simple and clean with a fluid repeat that is easily customizable. Click to view example Stilkunst ‘Stilkunst’ was a tongue-in-cheek mantra of the Werkstätte and the associated Vienna Secession, literally ‘art style’. Ovals and squares are contained in vertical bars of varying thickness; the ovals differ in size to create depth. We consider the parallel lines characteristic of the Wiener Werkstätte. We love collaborating with designers to express their aesthetic by creating a design solution from the ground up. We take inspiration both from our client’s design plan as well as motifs from the architectural and interior vernacular. The Modern Metal team works diligently to craft a design properly suited to the task at hand. Design development typically requires two weeks, with an additional six to eight weeks for production and delivery. Finishes & Materials Materials Modern Metal products are available in a variety of materials: SteelCold rolled steel is our most popular go to material, offered in thicknesses ranging from 22 gauge to 3/8″ thick. It’s strong, durable, and economical. Steel must be powder-coated, or it will rust. Stainless SteelStainless Steel is ideal for exterior applications as well as wet environments because its inherent qualities prevent rusting. We can use whatever type of stainless you specify, but we most commonly use 304 due to its excellent corrosion resistance and value. AluminumAluminum is light and strong. Ideal for exterior applications because it corrodes but it does not rust as steel will. As aluminum corrodes, it creates a thin layer of aluminum oxide, a very hard material that actually protects the aluminum from further corrosion. For ultimate exterior protection from the elements, we recommend powder coating aluminum. It is a softer metal than our cold rolled steel, so it’s susceptible to dents over time. BrassBrass, our favorite and most luxurious metal! An alloy of copper and zinc, brass may be brushed, polished, or oil rubbed. It is a soft malleable metal, which will corrode naturally to reveal a green blue patina if left unfinished. Depending on the percentage of zinc, it ranges in color from yellow to red undertones. Bronze Bronze is another luxurious alloy, composed of copper and tin. Bronze may be brushed, polished, or oil-rubbed. It is characterized by a more dullish red color rather than the yellow undertones which brass has due to it having tin instead of zinc. Bronze is a bit harder than brass, and also patinas naturally with oxidation if left unfinished. Finishes Modern Metal products are available in a variety of finishes: Brushed or polished (aluminum, stainless steel, brass, and bronze)We can either brush or polish aluminum, stainless steel, brass, and bronze just depends on the look you’re wanting. Brushing is usually done by machine establishing a consistent and even grain. Polishing is a more expensive finishing technique done by hand by the finest finishers. Oil rubbed (brass and bronze)Oil-rubbed brass and bronze is a specialty finish which involves dipping the metal into a chemical bath and then rubbing it by hand to achieve the desired patina, giving it an antique look. It is most commonly marked by dark brown tones with a bit of the metal showing through. It really varies from piece to piece as this is all done by hand. There can be extreme beauty in the variability associated with this process. We work with the fine artisans at Gerber Hinge Finishing to achieve this special finish. Primed for paint-to-match optionOur white powder-coat also serves as a primer which can be painted to match by your painter or contractor. If requested, we can also use a standard primer as a base.
